Former Energy Minister Backs Resumption of Work on Myitsone Dam, say MPS

The chairman of a parliamentary environment committee has expressed support for resuming work on the Chinesebacked Myitsone dam on the Ayeyarwady River, three members of the Pyithu Hluttaw have revealed. On September 30, 2011, President U Thein Sein suspended work on the controversial project for the term of his presidency, in a decision greeted by national acclaim that followed widespread and escalating protests.

U Thein Yi said he believed that U Lun Thi made the comments because he wanted to demonstrate the friendship between Myanmar and China. more…
